The school quickly became popular among affluent families who were loking for an alternative to traditional schools. In 1900, Montessori opened her own daycare center in Rome called the Casa dei Bambini, or Children's House. She graduated in 1896 with honors and went on to complete her residency at a hospital for women and children. When she was eighteen, she enrolled at the University of Rome's School of Medicine, becoming the first woman to do so. She attended a traditional girls' school where she excelled in her studies.
